Politics in America

This is from an email I sent my dad this morning about the election. He asked me if I thought America was polarized.

“I was really surprised by the popular vote. You live in a very conservative area. I live in a very liberal area. There are a lot of angry liberals here. Very angry liberals. They’re saying things like “Is half of America just retarded?”

It reminds me a lot of 96, except we knew we were fucked in 96, and they thought they were going to sweep the country this year.

I have a lot of fundamental problems with Bush (huge government growth, bad anti-freedom legislation like the Patriot act and the DMCA, high-spending, the stem cell ban) and I really don’t like that he buys into all the wacko Christian right bullshit.

However, that’s not enough to get me to embrace a fucking Massachusetts liberal.

The thing is, there are a lot of people like me. We like small government. We like low taxes and low spending. We like all religions (including the nutball Christians) out of our government. We like a government that will protect our freedoms rather than limit them. We like government that trusts us to do the right thing, rather than forces us to do what it wants. We don’t like the government wasting our money on social programs that won’t work or wars that have no end.

Neither the Democrats, nor the Republicans serve my needs. The Republicans are closest now, but the closer they get to the nutball Christian right, the farther they get from me.”

Dan Gilmore said basically the same thing here, and I think he’s right.

The Democratic reaction to the election just gets funnier and funnier. They act like the majority of the country had been overrun by zombies or Nazis.

Maybe I can afford to move to San Francisco if enough jobs open up because of the exodus from the oppressive USA.

Your Dad is cool.

My appreciation of Kerry increased by 1000% when he gracefully conceded the election.

Franklin Roosevelt said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

If we let our government use our fear of terrorism to limit our freedom, then the terrorists have already won.

Well, i guess youre right about limiting freedom, but then again, the freedoms we get are ones that terrorists who have infiltrated our country will get, so they would have an easier time with their terrorist activities. See what i mean? i'm all for a free country, but maybe freedoms should be limited, like limited freedoms to people from countries that are known to have ties to terrorism. or to people from countries that we are involved in some kind of conflict with. I know that there are a lot more good people out there than terrorists, but still, we need to be as careful as possible

I believe that any time the government limits our freedom, it's a bad thing, even if the intentions are good. Remember, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, Tucker.

at the sacrifice of personal freedom?

i disagree

Posted by: kogarne at November 4, 2004 06:49 AM

I agree, but except i agree with the patriot act, personally, i think the government should have acess to any info it wants, which i think would result in a safer society.
